Tips for Working with a Chiropractor

June 23, 2023

A chiropractic doctor is a highly trained healthcare provider who specializes in disorders of the spinal column. Experts in musculoskeletal conditions and symptoms like herniated discs and neck pain, chiropractors deliver a wide range of customized services to both children and adults. If you are considering visiting a chiropractor, here are some tips you should know.

1. Bring Your Insurance Card and Important Documents with You

Your chiropractor will need to know about any existing medical conditions you may have to help determine the best options for your treatment. It is also important to make sure your chiropractor is qualified to handle your workers’ compensation claim. Check with your insurance company ahead of time to confirm that your chiropractor is in-network and can offer the services you need.

2. Dress in Comfortable Clothing

During your visit, your chiropractor will perform a hands-on examination of your spinal alignment and any areas of injury. They may also require imaging assessments. Be sure to wear loose-fitting clothing to help you stay comfortable during the examination.

3. Provide Your Chiropractor with Accurate Information About Your Injury or Condition

Be honest and complete in detailing your symptoms–how severe they are, what motions and body areas they impact and how/when your condition began. Also, bring a medication list and any reports of any recent tests or surgeries you have had from your primary care physician. Your current and past medical history helps your chiropractor properly assess your current health problem or injury and formulate the right treatment plan.

4. Ask Questions

Do not be afraid to ask about your diagnosis, the details of your treatment plan, when you may be able to return to work, and what restrictions you may have. Make sure you fully understand how your chiropractic care will happen, how long it may last, and how you may feel after each session.

5. Follow Your Chiropractor’s Directions for At-home Care

Most chiropractic care and physical therapy involve some “homework.” This may be heat or cold application, changes in what you eat, stretching and strengthening exercises and more. The interventions you do at home enhance what your chiropractor does in the office. So, stay with your treatment plan, work hard, and be patient. Remember that healing takes time and effort.

6. Stay in Touch with Your Chiropractor

In between scheduled visits, communicate with your chiropractor about any changes in how you feel or function. This way, they can adjust your at-home or in-office care as needed and better understand how well your treatment plan is working.
